History and Background

Founded in 1983 by Jim Bernau, a passionate Oregon native, Willamette Valley Vineyards started from humble beginnings. Bernau cleared an old pioneer plum orchard in the Salem Hills and began nurturing his first vine plants with lengths of garden hose. His dream? To create a uniquely world-class Pinot Noir. Fast forward to today, and the vineyard has blossomed into a benchmark of quality and innovation, even earning acclaim as "One of America’s Great Pinot Noir Producers" by Wine Enthusiast Magazine.

Our commitment to quality wine production begins with the careful management of our vineyards:

• Pinot Noir Specialization: Pioneering techniques in Pinot Noir production, including the use of CO2 to displace oxygen and induce natural fermentation within whole clusters of hand-picked grapes.
• Old World Meets New: The introduction of Dijon clones from Burgundy in the 1980s significantly uplifted the quality of our Chardonnay and other varietals.
