Description
Windhorse Vineyard Overview
History and Background
Windhorse Vineyard draws its unique name from the mythical Tibetan windhorse, a winged creature representing strength, speed, and the positive energy of life forces. Emphasizing social responsibility and environmental sustainability, the vineyard operates within the Columbia Gorge wine producing area and is one of only two L.I.V.E. and Salmon Safe certified vineyards in this region. Recently, the vineyard has undergone transformational changes including the replanting of old grape blocks and the introduction of new varietals.
Vineyard Details and Wine Production
Terroir
Windhorse Vineyard is uniquely situated in the Columbia Gorge AVA, encapsulating a new terroir characterized by the complex interactions of its climate, soil, and local geology. The vineyard stretches up to 1,300 feet in elevation, which protects it from severe winter freezes. This elevation, combined with the steep canyon lands and the fierce westward winds, creates a distinct microclimate ideal for vine growth.
Soil and Climate
The vineyard flourishes on volcanic soils derived from weathered volcanic sandstone, categorized as Cherryhill series soils. These deep loamy soils coupled with controlled deficit irrigation practices support the growth of robust, flavorful grapes.
Varietals
Windhorse cultivates a range of varietals including:
- Syrah
- Grenache
- Cabernet Franc
- Primitivo
- Sangiovese
- Nero d’Avola
- Chenin Blanc
These varieties benefit from the unique growing conditions afforded by the vineyard’s west-facing slopes, enhancing the flavor and color profiles of the grapes.
